The Battle of Lenadoon ended a short-lived ceasefire, which had been declared on 26 June to accommodate talks between an IRA delegation and representatives of the British government. The series of gun-battles was sparked off when an IRA attempt to unofficially re-house families in vacant houses on Lenadoon Avenue was thwarted by the UDA and British Army.
