Stephen McKenna was born in London and studied there at the Slade School of Art. In 1973 he moved to Donegal. He has also lived in Belgium, Germany, and Italy. In the late 1980s, living in Italy and having absorbed the lessons of Roman and Etruscan art, Stephen McKenna produced the beginnings of a long series of paintings of interiors. They embody a harmony in living, working and thinking. This particular work was produced during a working trip to Pompeii in 1986. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize that same year. McKenna was President of the RHA from 2005-2009, during which the building was reconstructed, to include the school and studios. €6,000-€8,000 (£5,410-£7,210 approx.)
