33 Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) THE ONLY TREE IN THE BURREN, 1930-1932 oil on canvas signed lower right; with number [10] on reverse 16 by 24in. (40.6 by 61cm) Provenance: Oriel Gallery, Dublin, 1982; Private collection This is one of several tree - paintings, all windblown-several are listed in Kennedy 2007 - and are notable. Here there is very little impasto, even for Paul Henry, and the canvas has virtually been stained with paint, certainly in the sky. The tree itself has been painted over the sky and there are one or two pieces of impasto on the trunk. Otherwise there is little impasto used, except for the light catching the mountain in the distance, the strip of foreground in the middle distance and the rocks themselves. The rocks are a permanent feature of Henry’s style. There is some flurry of attention around the signature. It is impossible to say where the scene is, but one thing is certain, that it dates around 1930-1932. Dr. SB Kennedy August 2018 €50,000-€70,000 (£45,050-£63,060 approx.)
