18th to 20th Century 56 1805 (July 20 ), (1 Thermidor an 13 de la Republic) Letter from General Arthur O’Connor to General [François-Xavier] Donzelot. A three-page letter on Army of the French Republic notepaper. Arthur O’Connor was born near Bandon, Co. Cork, was educated at Trinity College Dublin and called to the Bar in 1788, but inheriting a fortune, never practised. From 1790 to 1795 he was a Member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons for Philipstown. In 1796 he became a member of the Society of United Irishmen. He and Lord Edward Fitzgerald petitioned France for aid in support of an Irish revolution. While traveling to France he was arrested and imprisoned at Fort George near Inverness. O’Connor was released in 1802 under the condition of “banishment” and went to Paris. The Emperor Napoleon regarded him as the accredited representative of the United Irishmen. In February 1804 he appointed O’Connor General of Division in the French army. General Berthier, Minister of War, directed that O’Connor was to join the expeditionary army intended for the invasion of Ireland at Brest. In 1805 General O’Connor met and married Louise ‘Eliza’ Alexandrine Condorcet, the daughter of the late philosopher, mathematician and Enlightenment thinker Nicolas de Condorcet (1743-1794). Following the death of Eliza’s mother, Sophie, Eliza and Arthur Condorcet-O’Connor published the Marquis de Condorcet’s works in twelve volumes between 1847 and 1849.
