(3) To circumvent prison rules of only one sheet of paper per letter per month, Thomas Ashe’s sister, Nora used the largest paper sheet (17 x 22 inches) she could find, and then transcribed letters from other correspondents to her brother. These include Cathal Brugha who includes mention of Austin Stack, Willie Cosgrave, Con Collins, Finn Lynch and “Pierce Beazley”. Other writers are Thomas Nunan and Richard Mulcahy, the latter describing fundraising efforts around Ireland, also Domhnall O Tuathail expounding on the teaching of Irish, etc. A total of 12pp. Family of Thomas & Nora Ashe; Private collection. Short letter, part of a multi-correspondent letter, from Dr Richard Francis Hayes in Lewes Prison, also two letters from Miceal McHugh, one, intriguingly from an address in Fairford, Gloucestershire, regarding some deported republicans, who were ordered out of their residences in Oxford and ordered to live in Fairford and stay out of Oxford. In his hand in ink on prison paper, 2pp. Discusses Nora’s visit and gives her particular instructions regarding getting permits from the Home Office, and hopes “no submarine may cross your path”.
