118 History 196 1917 (10 April) letter from Richard Mulcahy, later commander- in-chief of the IRA, to Thomas Ashe in Lewes Gaol. Written in pencil in Mulcahy’s hand. Interesting content, apparently coded, about Mulcahy travelling around the country collecting for the “Gaelic League”when he was actually collecting and organising for the IRA in preparation for the War of Independence. Ashe, as the commander of the Volunteers in their only succesful battle in the Rising, was much respected by men like Mulcahy and Collins, as this letter evidences. 2.5pp Family of Thomas Ashe; Private collection. In Ashe’s hand in ink on part pages of prison paper - the remainder having been separated for Ashe’s other correspondents.
