151 History THE ECLECTIC COLLECTOR · 25 & 26 JULY 2020 273 1923 (10 July). Smuggled letter from Curragh Internment Camp by Civil War prisoner describing illtreatment. To Nora Ashe, sister of Thomas Ashe, from her “cousin Jeo”, complaining of two months of illtreatment - “we were kicked and beaten about by R. Tans and Northern Specials. I never thought men could be so cruel”. He claims that most of the officers in the camp are English, that the chaplain wouldn’t admit them to Mass unless they signed loyalty to the Free State, etc. “This letter is not going out the usual way so be careful when you answer” Family of Thomas & Nora Ashe; Private collection. Galway A piece of fabric from the wing, 4.5 by 3 inches, with its accompanying contemporaneous envelope and inscription, framed with an original sepia photograph of the aeroplane, and two picture postcards. Galway Includes a real photographic picture postcard, which was probably produced locally within a day or two of the landing, with an inscription detailing the event. Framed.
