Estimate €2000-€2500 (approx £1,820-£2,270) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot 81 82 1880 (5 February) Irish Famine: the Queen’s Speech, a manuscript by Sir Stafford Northcote, Chancellor of The Exchequer. “A paragraph suggested...for the Queen’s Speech. Each minister suggests a paragraph and the Prime Minister incorporates those he accepts into the draft which he proposes [to the Queen] himself”. written on the reverse of 10 Downing Street printed notepaper. it opens “The failure of the usual crops has given rise to much anxiety in some parts of Ireland”. Condition: Very good. Hansard: “ the serious deficiency in the usual crops in some parts of Ireland has rendered necessary special precautions on the part of my Government to guard against the calamities with which those districts were threatened.” Sir Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh (1818-1897) was a British Conservative politician. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer between 1874 and 1880 and as Foreign Secretary between 1885 and 1886, and was one of only two people to hold the office of First Lord of the Treasury without ever being Prime Minister.
