Provenance: The artist’s family by descent; Gorry Gallery, Dublin; Whence purchased by Dr McKee in 1997; Whyte’s, 6 December 2008, lot 26; Estate of the purchaser Exhibited: ’An Exhibition of 18th, 19th and 20th Century Irish Paintings’, Gorry Gallery, Dublin, 12-25 June 1997, catalogue no. 84 The artist’s daughter has confirmed that this was painted on holiday in Italy in the 1950s. Born at Templemore, Co. Cork, the daughter of Col. Chester, Eileen Murray studied at Newlyn under Stanhope Forbes, whose influence can be seen in much of her work. After marrying Major F. S. J. Murray, she moved to India, returning to Ireland in 1920 to Mosstown House, Kenagh, Co. Longford. From here she exhibited regularly at the RHA, the RUA, the Dublin Sketching Club and Belfast Arts Society. In a letter dated 20 March 1999, the artist’s daughter, Diana M.
