74 War of Independence 168 1919-21. War of Independence. A Mauser “Peter The Painter” pistol. C96 9mm semi automatic pistol, serial number 22067. Also marked “Waffenfabrik Mauser Orbendorf A. Neckar”, “DA/20” and “S/N 067”With a Saorstát Éireann government label (1929 printing) inscribed “ Surrendered by Gd. A. Monahan Reg. No. 12152, Peter The Painter No. 22067, Craughwell, on the holster: “ With Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House Deactivation Certificate, 2018. Condition: Complete with wooden holster, some scratching to the gun and holster, normal wear for a well used weapon, very good. Provenance: Andrew Monahan; Thence to his daughter from whom acquired by the present owner. Andrew Monahan was born in 1892 in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. According to his family he cycled to Dublin after the 1916 Rising, joined the IRA and fought during the War of Independence. He served in the National Army during the Civil War and he is recorded as a Lieutenant in the Dublin Guards Infantry no. 14404 on 26/2/1922. After the Civil War he joined An Garda Síochána.
