76 War of Independence 171 1919 (22 & 23 February) The Irish Race Convention, Souvenir Program, Second Regiment Armory, Philadelphia. Illustrated programme from convention of prominent Irish-American business leaders, clergymen, and activists, including event schedule, biographies, book reviews, photographs, texts of addresses, historical essays, and many advertisements. Pp36 in printed wrappers, octavo. Also with this is a cyclostyle pp2 copy of a letter, dated 6 August 1920, to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Detroit from Eamon de Valera proposing an Irish Race Convention similar to that held in 1919, and a pp6 carbon copy of a typescript report by an American journalist on de Valera’s rebuttal of accusations - instigated by the British Government,over the financing of his campaign to seek support from the US President and Congress for the Irish Republic (Dáil Eireann). Interesting content. Condition: Wrappers discoloured, otherwise fine. The Irish Race Conventions were a disconnected series of conventions held by Irish nationalists. The majority were held in the United States and supported by Irish-American organisations, but others were held in Australia, Argentina, and France. Most related to the Irish Home Rule movement, later on 1916 Rising and The War of Independence, and the two most recent conventions – in 1947 and 1994 – dealt with issues relating to Northern Ireland.
