46 History 78 1861. Harland &Wolff Belfast drawings for SS Grecian and SS Italian Ink and watercolour drawing from the ship builder’s archive. 15 by 24in. (38.1 by 61cm) Condition: Excellent, no apparent faults, attractively framed, The Grecian was the first ship built for J. Bibby Sons & Co., after the formation of Harland &Wolff, She was launched on 12th January 1861 and delivered on 30 January. Together with her sister, the Italian, she was built for the New Orleans cotton trade but with the outbreak of the American Civil War was transferred to the Mediterranean. In 1873 she disappeared at sea. The Italian was launched on 27 March 1861 and delivered for immediate service to the Levant on 13 April. In 1869 she was wrecked after grounding in fog on Cape Finisterre.
