Pinback oval enamelled brass: DAUGHTERS OF IRELAND legend with harp motif at centre; reverse: MADE IN IRELAND P. QUINN BELFAST. 1 by 0.75in. (2.5 by 1.9cm) Condition: Very fine in an Edmond Johnson Dublin box. Inghinidhe na hÉireann (“Daughters of Ireland”) was a radical Irish nationalist women’s organisation led and founded by Maud Gonne from 1900 to 1914, when it merged with the new Cumann na mBan. Esther Mary Redmond was the daughter of John Redmond MP (1856-1918). Esther had four children and died at the age of 33 in 1917 in New York. A 9-carat gold badge, ‘C na mB’ above a Mauser-style rifle, later fitted with safety chain. Extremely rare. Similar to the gold badge worn by Countess Markievicz. 0.50 by 2in. (1.3 by 5.1cm) Condition: Very fine The Cumann na mBan badge came into use in or around 1915 and most were made from white metal, with a number struck in silver. A few were struck in gold and these are thought to have been for senior officers such as Constance Markievicz.
