From Battle of Ashbourne BOACC on Facebook: “Dress suitably in short skirts and strong boots, leave your jewels and gold wands in the bank, and buy a revolver.” Advice from Countess Markiewicz to the other revolutionary women of Ireland in 1915. However, the Countess did not limit herself to revolvers she was also an exponent of semi-automatic pistols and used C96 Mauser and FN pistols during the 1916 Rising. Throughout her revolutionary years, Markiewicz owned, used, and donated her firearms to others, proving not only her generosity but that she had a good eye for a gun. Among the earliest photographs of Markiewicz armed are a series of studio portraits taken sometime in 1915. These show her in her Irish Citizen Army uniform holding what appears to be a Smith and Wesson revolver.
