Manuscript agreement, 4 pages, between Sir Maurice Eustace, Lord Chancellor of Ireland and Sir William Dixon for the marriage of Dixon’s son, Richard to Eustace’s daughter, Mary, and for the marriage of Dixon’s daughter, Margaret, to Eustace’s nephew, Sir John Eustace. including dowries of £1,200 and lands including Barretstown, Bishop Hill, Duddingstown, Killternan, Ballybotagh, Patrick Street and Hangman’s Lane, all in Dublin, Calverstown and part of Kildare town, and many other lands, including areas of County Wexford. A very detailed and interesting 17th century ‘pre nup’. 15 by 9.50in. (38.1 by 24.1cm) Condition: Very minor edge tears, no loss of text, very legible, very good. Sir Maurice Eustace (circa 1590-1665) was an Irish landowner, politician, barrister and judge of the seventeenth century who spent the last years of his career as Lord Chancellor of Ireland. This was an office for which he felt himself to be entirely unfit, and in which he was universally agreed to be a failure. Manuscript indenture on vellum dated 1684, ‘Exemplification off the Recovery off Rathegeragh [Co. Carlow] .. sufferd by .. Colclough .. ano 1684.’ Large folded vellum manuscript with elaborate heading, apparently in legal Latin, large seals (fragmentary) attached. With a second vellum manuscript dated 27 April 1696, Margaret Leigh of the Citty of Dublin Widow and Robert Leigh the younger of Grays Inn .. Rt Honble William Lord Viscount Dongan of Clane .. Christopher Ussher of the Citty of Dublin .. lands in Kildare .. Large folded vellum sheet with seal and signatures. Surviving Irish legal documents dating from the troubled 17th century are rare. 20 by 30in. (50.8 by 76.2cm) Condition: Folded, some edge tears, very good for their age.
