(58.4 by 48.3cm) Pádraic Ó Conaire (1882–1928) was a pioneering writer who brought modernism and Realism to Irish-language literature. Born in Galway and orphaned young, he grew up in the Connemara Gaeltacht. He spent fifteen years working as a civil servant in London, where he began writing critically acclaimed short stories. His 1910 masterpiece, Deoraíocht (Exile), is widely celebrated as the first modern novel written in Irish. Returning to Ireland in 1914, he travelled as an activist for the Gaelic League. He rejected romantic peasant stereotypes, focusing instead on gritty urban life, isolation, and poverty. He died penniless in Dublin aged 46. €2,000-€3,000 (£1,710-£2,560 approx.)
