1834 - Rare informers document for Whitefoot / Captain Rock activities.

County of Kildare.

The sworn information of James Fitzpatrick, a native of Kildare but then a

prisoner in Naas Gaol, who was committed for White-foot offences. He

gives details of raids for arms by White-foot members, calling themselves “

Captain Rocks Men” and names ten men from Leighlinbridge area in Carlow

as members. Three-page statement.

1842 Strategic analysis, military situation Afghanistan, letter and map.

A critique of the war in Afghanistan in a 12-page letter by Major General

Sir Henry Smith, sent from Simla, with map. Writing of Afghanistan, Smith

states the Afghans are “a hostile population who can redeem by force of

Arms the Conquest of their Country and destroy the Army in its possession”

- “We are now in the act ONLY of endeavouring to retire as ‘Victorious

Seceders’ from contest, much honour will accrue to the Party from which

our Retreat is made”.

Lieutenant General Sir Henry George Wakelyn Smith, 1st Baronet of Aliwal GCB (28

June 1787 – 12 October 1860), known as Sir Harry Smith, was a notable English

soldier and military commander in the British Army of the early 19th century. A

veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, he is also particularly remembered for his role in the

Battle of Aliwal (India) in 1846, and as the husband of Lady Smith.

whereas parties have in some instances attempted to impose upon Loan

Societies by obtaining a Loan, and then with their sureties immediately

leaving the country: it shall be lawful for the Treasurer-to immediately sue

the parties concerned.

1847-1848. Petitions and related documents against Irish Poor Law

Relief due to famine.

Extraordinary printed documents objecting to the extension of relief to

those who are not in Poor-houses, supported by landlords who were to be

taxed to pay for the reliefs. Includes a resolution of the Reproductive

Employment Committee with a list of those present including the Earl of

Arran, the Earl of Desart, Sir Montagu Chapman etc., as well as a petition

to Parliament seeking subsidised emigration of the poor. (4).
