circa 1820: Cork Hedge School manuscript book of stories
transcribed by Uilliam Ó hAodha
An excellent 324pp manuscript book in the Irish language with stories
and notes likely to have been transcribed by Uilliam Ó hAodha (Willie
Hayes) from Barrack Cross, County Cork. A hedge school master most of
his few known manuscripts date from between 1814 and his death in
1836. Lámhscríbhinní Gaeilge such as this example rarely appear for
auction, an extremely scarce document . With 1988 letter from Dr.
Pádraig de Brún relating to the history of the manuscript. 7 x 6in.

19th Century: Cork City Dinner Service hand painted plate
An interesting plate from a large dinner service set commissioned for
the Lord Mayor of Cork’s Old Mansion House (now the Mercy Hospital)
which was built in 1767. Decorated with symbols including: the Cap of
Maintenance signifying the continuity of the Mayor and the
Corporation; the Dart (at left and right) which was used in an annual
ceremony whereby the Mayor, as Admiral of the Port defined the
jurisdiction of Cork Harbour by throwing it off Blackrock Castle; the
Mace and Sword are incorporated with the Dart; the Portcullis at the
bottom was used to prevent ships entering the channel when the city
was walled; the chain surrounding the coat of arms was presented by
Queen Elizabeth in 1571 to Maguire Roche, Mayor of Cork. The Coat of
Arms, representing King’s Old Castle and Queen’s Old Castle and a Ship,
was designed by CR Payne.

Court of the Exchequer Ireland Exemplification or Decree of Judgement
in the case of plaintiffs Robert Marth & William Burke against
defendants Edward Crosbie & Thomas Cherburgh Bligh. A large vellum
decree relating to a dispute regarding lands in the Barony of Kells, Co.
Meath. Places mentioned include Ballymacdavid, Scriboge, Aghnaneen
etc.. A total of 16 large format pages, the first with an engraving of
King George III 26 x 27in. (66.04 x 68.58cm)
