1841 (1 March) Limerick Rockite Notice £10 reward poster
A scarce reward poster issued by Head Constable John Maher offering a
reward of £10 to any person who shall bring forward information
regarding an incident on 24 February 1841 when “...a Rockite Notice was
posted on the lands of Tubbermurry in the County of Limerick,
threatening Persons in the employment of Mr. Bolton Waller, and
ordering such as are not over six months in his employment to quit his
service.” The Rockites were a group of working class revolutionaries
mainly active in the 1820s, but still around in the 1840s. The pseudonym
“Captain Rock” was used on threatening letters sent mainly to landlords
who evicted tenants or various officers of the State. 12 x 8in. (30 x

1842 (May 30) Signature of John Francis on the day he attempted to
assassinate Queen Victoria
Signature of John Francis on a slip of paper dated 30 May 1842 the day
that Francis was arrested for a second attempt on the life of Victoria. On
30 May 1842 John Francis attempted to assassinate Queen Victoria. He
fired a pistol on the carriage in which the Queen was travelling along
the Mall in London. Francis was seized by police and convicted of high
treason but the sentence was later commuted to transportation for life.
He was a model prisoner in Australia, was released in 1856 and became a
builder in Launceston. He died in 1885.

1842 (1 June) House of Commons and House of Lords addresses
signed by members of parliament
A remarkable set of signatures of members of the House of Commons
and House of Lords in 1842. Purportedly signed following the Queen
Victoria assassination attempt in May 1842 (see lot 98). Includes the
signature of Daniel O’Connell (as Lord Mayor of Dublin) above those of
his sons Maurice and John O’Connell.

1847 (14 July) Office of the Irish Relief Committee famine letter
An extremely interesting letter sent from the Office of the Irish Relief
Committee in New York, dated 14 July 1847 during the Famine, to the
Central Relief Committee of the Society of Friends in Dublin, sent via the
Packet Ship ‘Fidelia’, handstamped ‘8’ with ‘Liverpool/Ship’ and Dublin
datestamps. The letter reports the continuing collection of provisions and
bread stuffs from the West Coast of the U.S.A. and ‘the despatch of 195
Bushells of Indian Corn meal on the British brig ‘Thomas and William’
bound for Galway for distribution amongst the suffering poor in Ireland.
The British Bark ‘Free trader’ now loading for Cork will have on board
600 bags of Indian corn and 600 Bushells Corn meal flour and the fine
American Bark ‘Soane’ has been chartered to carry an entire cargo of
Indian Corn meal flour direct to Galway. ‘The letter also reports on the
executive committee of the City of Milwaukee who have made ‘the
following distributions of flour, viz. 50 Bushells to Dublin, 50 to Belfast,
50 to Cork, 75 to Waterford, 100 to Galway, 50 to Valencia in Kerry, and
are in hopes of getting 50 Bushells more to send to Westport, County
Mayo’

1848 (8 April). Letter from an Irishman giving eyewitness account of
the Second Revolution in France
Written by “James” (surname unknown) at the Hotel de Lille et d’Albion
to his sister Mrs H Mooney at Frascati Park, Blackrock, Dublin (once the
home of Lord Edward Fitzgerald), he gives a graphic account of the
affects of the revolution on the city and its people. Manuscript, pp3 and
cover page with postal markings.

blotter for the 11th Precinct
A unique manuscript record book of the activities and arrests of the 11th
Precinct New York Police Department. An extremely valuable historical
record containing many hundreds of names and addresses of offenders
with crimes including a drunk Irish housewife sentenced to 6 months in
the workhouse, pistol fired in the street, drunken sailors, arson,
attempted suicide, a stray hog etc. While also recording police officer
