Nolan’s fascination with Ned Kelly, an Australian bushranger of Irish descent, developed from stories told by his

grandfather, a trooper responsible for capturing the outlaw in 1880.The series follows key events of the Kelly story

depicting the scenes in a way which allowed Nolan to incorporate the distinct Australian landscape into the narrative.
