penny red and fourpence rose and fourpence orange,

both on letters from Dublin wine merchants to France

A one page letter to Colonel Ffrench, from R. Clancy,

signed to the front by Daniel O’Connell for the purpose

of availing of parliamentary free post on behalf of the

sender - as much abused by public representatives in

the 19th century as it was in the 20th! The letter opens,

The inclosed (sic) letter is written some days - but I could

not get a frank sooner!!”.”
