1914 (24th September) Letter to The Irish Volunteers from the Provisional Committee.

An important two-page mimeograph letter, addressed to the membership of the Irish Volunteers, following John

Redmond’s assertion that the volunteers’ duty was to join the British Army and support the British and Allied war

commitment. The letter outlines six proposals to be raised at the next meeting of the Provisional Committee on 25

November, 1914. Signed Eoin MacNeill, Ua Rathghaille, Thomas MacDonagh, Joseph Plunkett, Piaras Beaslai, P. H.

Pearse, Bulmer Hobson, et al. This letter initiated the split between the eventual participants in the Easter Rising, who

retained the name Irish Volunteers, and Redmond’ s National Volunteers, many of whom joined the Crown forces in

WorldWar I.

Estimate €200-€300 £150-£220
