In 1946 Norah McGuinness began painting in Italy and in 1950 she was chosen, along with Nano Reid, to represent

Ireland at the Venice Biennale. It was the first time Ireland had participated at the event. Italian President Luigi Einaudi

bought McGuinness’ painting The Black Church, while the Italian critic Umberto Apollonio praised her vibrating and

rather evocative tonality”.”
