1940 (August 10) Battle of Britain, fragments of

an identified Messerschmitt Bf 110C shot down

on “Adlertag!” day.

Five aluminium fragments, mounted and framed.

The aircraft was piloted by Lieutenant W. Munch-

meyer, escorting light bombers en route to South-

ampton. Munchmeyer’s flight was attacked by

a Hurricane flown by Sgt. L. N. Guy from 601

Squadron, RAF. Guy severly damaged the Bf-

110C, which dived away from the fighting some-

where in the vicinity of Winchester and crashed

near the small town of North Badesley. Munch-

meyer survived, his gunner was killed.

Initiated by Hermann Göring, “Adlertag!” -- “Ea-

gle Day” was planned as a day of massive flights of

Luftwaffe aircraft that would eliminate the British

air force.
