Uniforms & Equipment of The World War I Ger-
man Soldier as Painted by Soldier-Artist Friedrich
Ludwig Scharf by Charles Wooley, Schiffer Pub-
lishing, USA, 2004.
Educated at the Munster School of Art, Friedrich
Scharf joined the Mecklenberg army circa 1910
and served in the 1914-18 War. In 1923, after
working in an office, he became a freelance artist
and began publishing illustrated books on military
history. The Second World War curtailed his ac-
tivities and postwar he turned to decorating china
and textiles for a while in order to make a living.
He still painted military subjects however up to his
death in 1965.
