Basil Rákóczi was born in London in 1908 to a Hungarian father and an Irish mother. He painted from a very

early age and received his formal training at Brighton School of Art before studying at the Académie de la

Grande Chaumiére, Paris. In 1935 he founded the Society for Creative Psychology at 8 Fitzroy Street, Lon-

don, where he met fellow artist Kenneth Hall. The two became good friends and as war approached the pair

decided to move to Ireland. While in Ireland, they exhibited with other artists such as Mainie Jellett, Norah

McGuinness and Louis le Brocquy as the White Stag Group. Rákóczi showed ten works at the RHA between

1946 and 1952.
