Born in Stretford, Lancashire, Charles Cundall studied at the Manchester School of Art, the RCA and the
Slade in London. His first one-man show was held at Colnaghis in 1927. After travelling widely through-
out Europe, Russia and Australasia, he returned to London and was elected a member of numerous pres-
tigious societies. He visited Ireland periodically during the 1940s, during which period he was an official
War Artist with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, and showed at the RHA in 1939 and 1949.
