1971, July 29 Autograph letter from Frank R

Leavis (1895-1978) literary critic regarding

James Joyce.

Two-page autograph letter by the mid-twentieth

century English literary critic. Written after his

retirement on his personal headed notepaper

(12 Bulstrode Gardens, Cambridge) F R Leavis

fulminates to a graduate student who has

inadvertently provoked his wrath. The main target

is the young man’s enthusiasm for James Joyce: ‘I

explained many years ago why I saved myself for

the writers who seem to me most interesting and

repaying, and proposed to leave him [underlined]

to the academic industrialists (mostly American).

At the best he is a sign of approaching death, and

not of new life.’Together with envelope. (2)

Estimate €200-€250 (approx £170-£212)
