Postmarked 24 October 1910 from Pearse at

St Enda’s School, to his solicitor, Gerrard in

Westmoreland Street, seeking the lease of his

school, all in his hand. Signed “P.H. Pearse”.

A low-relief portrait of Padraig Pearse on a limestone

slab by Redmond Herrity, one of three carved by the

artist.

12 by 12in. (30.5 by 30.5cm)

Donegal sculptor Redmond Herrity was inspired by

street sculptors in India to begin working in three

dimensions. On trip to Australia worked with stone

for the first time and he is now best known for his

work in that medium. He graduated from Leitrim

Sculpture Centre in Ireland in 2001 and went on

to work in Carrara, Italy, where he began learning

the techniques of classical marble portraiture. His

large scale public works include: Celtic Cross (2006),

Cathedral Square, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal; Errigal

College (2007), Letterkenny, Co. Donegal; Flight

of the Earls (2007), Letterkenny Town Park, Co.

Donegal; Miami Showband Memorial (2007), Parnell

Square, Dublin; Our Lady (2008), Rasharkin, Co.

Antrim; John Doherty (2013), Ardara, Co. Donegal
