1912 (March 6) Signed autograph letter from Roger Casement, loosely inserted in a copy of The

Black Diaries.

The one page letter to ‘Gardiner’, relating to a book Casement is lending him, Joseph Arthur Comte de

Gobineau’s Ethnological Theory; loosely inserted in Peter Singleton-Gates & M. Girodias. The Black Diaries.

Joseph Arthur Comte de Gobineau (1816-1882) is today most remembered for developing the

theory of the Aryan master race and helping to legitimise racism by scientific racist theory and racial

demography. Roger Casement (1964-1916) is described as the “father of twentieth-century human rights

investigations”, he was honoured in 1905 for the Casement Report on the Congo and knighted in 1911

for his important investigations of human rights abuses in Peru.
