124 History 214 1917 (22 August) letter fromMichael Collins to Nora Ashe, after the arrest of her brother Thomas. In Collins hand in ink, saying he has visited Thomas in the Curragh Camp and “he’s in great form”. A poignant letter from his great friend; for a month later Thomas Ashe would die from being force fed in Mountjoy Jail. With stamped envelope addressed in Collins’ hand. Typescript on Irish National Aid and Volunteers Dependents’ Fund, signed in ink “Miceal”with manuscript additional note in Collins’ hand. “Tom is being tried today” , “The President of the court was obviously biased” and he likens the farcical trial to a “Gilbert and Sullivan skit trial by jury”. (2) Written in ink on paper embossed with royal arms, “I have just heard my sentence - 2 years hard labour, one being remitted”.
