With a fine engraving of a Union soldier talking to a blacksmith and his assistant with a poster reading “Proclamation / IRISH REPUBLIC” on a wall behind. The form is blank and reads “Irish National Bonds. It is hereby Certified that ___ is entitled to $___ of Irish National Bonds on presentation of this Certificate to the Treasurer of the Fenian Brotherhood - 186__”. Printed by the Continental Bank Note Company, New York. Issued to raise funds for the Fenians whose abortive Rising took place in 1867. We have only seen one of this type before. Rare. SIZE?? 3.50 by 8in. (8.9 by 20.3cm) Condition: Folded in three leaving heavy crease marks, slight soiling, very good. Estimate €800-€1,200 (approx £700-£1,040) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot 69 70 1866 Irish Republic Twenty Dollars Bond issued by the Fenian Brotherhood in the USA. “It is hereby Certified that Irish Republic Is Indebted to Bearer in the sum of Twenty Dollars Redeemable Six Months after the acknowledgement of the Independence of the Irish Nation with interest from the date hereof inclusive at Six per cent per annum on presentation of this bond at the Treasury of the Irish Republic.” Dated in manuscript January 23rd, 1866,” signed in the plate by John O’Mahony. Rare high denomination large certificate, complete with counterfoil. 7 by 11in. (17.8 by 27.9cm) Condition: Folded in 4, creases, slight soiling, couple of edge tears in unprinted margin areas, about fine.
