34 Fenian Rising 72 19th century Irish-American flag, possibly from an Irish Brigade in the US Army. Dark green cloth with a gold painted eagle in a shamrock wreath surround, gold tassels at the edges. 40 by 60in. (101.6 by 152.4cm) Condition: Some splitting along folds otherwise very fine with fresh colours. Provenance: With the present family since 1916. According to family lore this flag was given to a member of the family for safekeeping along with some ammunition, after the 1916 Rising. it is possible the flag was sent from the USA and intended for use by the Irish Volunteers. Similar design flags of Irish Brigades in the US Civil War are recorded but none with exactly the same design as this. One pair stamped Hiatt and 3, the other stamped 2. Found in Ireland. Condition: Oxidised to a varying degree, heavily on the pair marked “2”, lacking screw key.
