35 THE ECLECTIC COLLECTOR - TIMED ON-LINE AUCTION 1 MAY - 15/16 MAY 2021 19th Century 75 The Limbless’ Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh MP (1831 - 1889) - drawings and manuscripts. Archive relating to the incredible Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh, M.P. The file includes five sketches, one signed ‘Arthur’, also a coloured sketch titled ‘Dr Boxwell at Meet’ (Dr Francis Boxwell was mentor and lifelong friend to Arthur), a sketch of the 15th century Kavanagh Charter Horn and another of a 15th century Scandinavian drinking horn. Also included is large newspaper article detailing ‘ The Ancient Pedigree of the Kavanaghs of Borris’ and a typed history of Arthur 1831 - 1889 and a typed account of the Kavanaghs and their heirlooms, and a letter of condolence dated 1902 from Arthur’s wife Frances on the death of Arthur Pack Beresford during the Boar War. Condition: Generally very good. Born without arms or legs, Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh served as Member of Parliament for Wexford for fourteen years, travelled to Russia, India and Persia on safari, was an expert horseman and shot, and was a keen yachtsman. On the headed notepaper of his yacht the ‘EVA’ with stamped logo of the Royal Yacht Squadron, a three page letter from the pen of the incredible Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh, M.P. This letter addressed to his land agent “Devine”who it appears has sought a Publican’s licence for himself. The letter expresses Arthur’s concern over the issuing of pub licences in Borris, stating his objection ‘ to increasing the number of publican’s licences in the town’ . The letter ends with the message from Arthur to his land agent ‘it is only for me to say that you would have to choose between it and the position you now hold. ‘ With two applications dated October 1797 for Publicans licences for Charles Corcoran of Rocksavage and also for Simon Byrne of Ballyinghan signed by two ‘of his Majesty’s Justices’Walter Kavanagh and Robert Cornwall. Noted on application: ‘Licences are not to be granted to any person but to persons who keep Victualling Houses and furnish provisions to be consumed in their houses or Inns, Taverns, Coffee-Houses, or Ale House, and use no other Trade, and Licences to others are void’. (3 documents). Condition: A few edge tears, slight foxing at edges, generally very good.
