44 History 74 1866 The Irish Republic ‘Fenian’ Bond for Ten Dollars. Scarce issued note, large format with vignettes of Wolfe Tone and Edward FitzGerald, Dated 1 February with signature of John O’Mahony in the plate. ’The Irish Republic is indebted unto Daniel Langton or bearer in the sum of Ten Dollars redeemable six months after the acknowledgement of the Independence of the Irish Nation with interest from the date hereof inclusive at Six percent per annum payable on presentation of this bond at the Treasury of the Irish Republic.’ Numbered 2393 108 F, dated March 30th 1866, at “John McGuire Centre”. 7.25 by 10.50in. (18.4 by 26.7cm) Condition: Folded, creases, slight soiling and foxing, fine. Printed by Continental Bank Note Printing Company of New York. These bonds were issued in America to fund the Fenian Rising of 1867. They were redeemed almost eighty years later by the Irish Government. Any outstanding bonds were thereafter valued as collectibles. Written at Kilbroney, the letter refers to Kenyon’s poor health, the early deaths of their fellow revolutionaries, and various interesting political matters. 7 by 4.50in. (17.8 by 11.4cm) Condition: The pages are split in three, but legible, a piece on last page missing. John Martin (8 September 1812 - 29 March 1875) was an Irish nationalist activist who shifted from early militant support for Young Ireland and Repeal, to non-violent alternatives such as support for tenant farmers’ rights and eventually as the first Home Rule MP, for Meath 1871-1875.
