22 History 41 1829. A case of abduction. The statements of Mary Moran and Elizabeth Moran. The joined statements of Mary Moran and Elizabeth Moran of Ballyconnel andWilliam Doyle of Hacketstown made before four Magistrates. In which Mary and her witnesses claim that “a large body of men, which included Denis and Peter Whelan of Ballybrack, collected around her at the fair of Hacketstown on the 5th February 1829, armed with sticks and other weapons, seized hold of Mary and carried her away a considerable distance for the purpose of compelling her to marry one of the men against her consent by force and violence”. Signed by all mentioned above. A rare original document detailing a chilling account of this barbaric practice. 14 by 9in. (35.6 by 22.9cm) Condition: A few edge tears away from text, very good. “Abduction can be described as the practice of carrying off a woman with the purpose of compelling her to marry a particular man who would then have access to the available dowry of money, land or other property, tied to the woman.
