to Dublin Brigade veteran
1919-21 War of Independence Service Medal, 1971 50th Anniversary of
the Truce Medal and 1939-1946 Emergency Service Medal with two
additional service bars, 26ú Cathlán issue, a unit made up of IRA
veterans. In box of issue and also with corresponding War of
Independence and Emergency Medal miniatures. A desirable group. All
awarded to Simon Murphy, of Ringsend, Dublin. served with Dublin
Brigade. Reputedly held at The Pigeon House Fort, Dublin. (5 items)

1917-21: Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. Acme Hammerless Revolver used
by Jackey McEvoy Irish Volunteers
Hopkins & Allen Acme Hammerless No 1 .32 centerfire, 5 shot side
loading revolver. 2 3/4” barrel, black grips and nickel plating showing
some wear. A good example of the varied weapons used by the
Volunteers during the War of Independence. McEvoy is reputed to have
been an associate of Michael Collins and acted as his aide-de-camp
during visits to the Drogheda area. With copy of his memorial card.

1917-21: British Army and Royal Irish Constabulary Longford War of
Independence photographs
2 monochrome photographs both taken during the same period and with
the same photographers code on reverse. The first showing a staged
British Army checkpoint with soldiers and a motorcycle with side car and
with manuscript inscription “At Longford”. The second showing British
Army soldiers and a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary posing
beside a similar motorcycle, with manuscript inscription “Nice Company”
Probably taken by the soldiers themselves or a hobby photographer.
Interesting and unique. Also with a Terence MacSwiney button badge (3

correspondence and documents relating to the Maher family of Dublin
A large collection of letters, documents and membership cards relating
to father and son Michael and William Maher of Harold’s Cross Dublin.
Including Department of Defence correspondence with letter from Capt.
Laurence Lyons confirming that Michael Maher formerly of Roscrea was
a member of A Coy. 7th Battalion Tipperary Brigade from 1917 to 1923.
Local Defence Forces pass and Irish Army Corps of Engineers Civilian
Employee’s Pass issued to Michael Maher. Irish National Union of
Woodworkers and Almalgamated Society of Woodworkers membership
cards for each year from 1937-50 and 1953-58 inclusive. Also a large
number of documents relating to his son William including
correspondence with University College Dublin where he worked in the
engineering department.

1919-27: Colonel James McGuinness collection including medals,
sword, documents and ephemera
A large collection of items relating to Colonel James Henry McGuinness,
Officer Commanding, No. 7 Brigade Irish Army. Including War of
Independence Medal, 1971 50th Anniversary of the Truce Medal, Irish
Army Free State Officer’s sword, ‘Irish Republican Army Portobello
Barracks’ special pass issued to McGuinness as a Commandant, in 1922,
commission letter dated 1 October 1924, invitation and newspaper
clipping relating to the attendance of Col McGuinness at a function in
the house of W. T. Cosgrave, real photographic postcard of McGuinness
in a group with Cosgrave, Military Service Pensions form detailing his
service, letter sent by his wife from Kerry relating to the Civil War and
the burials of soldiers killed at the Battle of Kilmallock, two small pocket
watches, flask, small bugle, postcard of Kevin O’Higgins, military maps
used for training purposes. Also a copied photograph of McGuiness and
copied documents relating to his service. A comprehensive collection
relating to a high ranking Irish Army officer.

1920 (21 January) Republic of Ireland Fifty Dollars Bond issued by
Éamon de Valera
A rare higher denomination. With printed signatures “Seán ua Nunain”
and “Eamon de Bhaileara”. 5.50 x 8.50in. (13.97 x 21.59cm)
These bonds raised several million dollars ostensibly for the work of the
Dáil and the War of Independence, but a large amount was later used to
found the
Irish Press.

1920 (2 July) Terence MacSwiney hand written and signed cheque
manuscript on Munster and Leinster Irish language cheque.
Cheque for £2 drawn on Banc na Mumhan & Laighean Tta, Corcaigh
(Munster & Leinster Bank, Cork), issued to Macroom Sports Committee.
Signed by MacSweeny in Irish Toirdhealbhach mac Suibhne, stamped as
paid on 13 July 1920. Also signed on reverse by the Secretary and
Chairman of Macroom Sports Committee. Interestingly Cork City and
County Archives hold a copy of the letter which enclosed this particular
cheque from MacSwiney to Harry Murphy, Secretary, Macroom Sports
Committee, described as “enclosing a ‘modest’ subscription for the
meeting on account of having ‘over- shot’ himself in numerous other
cases.” 3 x 6in. (7.62 x 15.24cm)
