“Egyptian Humour” cartoon postcards published by P. Coustoulidis and

1901-1909: Theodore Roosevelt - Collection of letters and ephemera
relating to Ambassador Frederick Wallingford Whitridge
The collection comprises: (1) Official appointment document signed by
Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States (1901-1909)
appointing Frederick Wallingford Whitmore as “Ambassador
Extraordinary of the United States of America on Special Mission as the
representative of the United States government on the occasion of the
wedding of King Alphonso XIII of Spain in June 1906. Also signed by
Secretary of State Elihu Root (2) Letter from Root on Dept. of State
Washington letterhead dated April 25th 1906 transmitting the
commission to Whitridge and referring to a letter from President
Roosevelt to be presented to the King of Spain by Whitridge (3) Two
typed letters on White House notepaper dated April 9th & 26th 1906
respectively: a congratulatory letter and the second refers to the
enclosure of two letters from Roosevelt to King Edward VII of England
and the German Emperor; (4) 3 manuscript letters congratulating
Whitridge on his appointment. (5) A 20pp. typed report titled ‘Special
American Embassy Madrid addressed to The Hon. Elihu Root Secretary of
State Washington D.C. outlining details of events that occurred on
Whitridge’s special mission at the wedding of Kong Alphonso XIII’s
wedding. It includes details of an attempt to assassinate King Alfonso
and Queen Victoria - when a bomb was thrown as the Royal Carriage
passed and refers to the numbers killed and wounded and the response
to what had occurred. (6) A batch of 14 assorted items, mostly formal
invitations to a range of functions from Feb 1904 - Dec. 1908. (23 items)

specimen slides
A small brass travelling monocular microscope with integral tripod stand
and tweezers, contained in original leather case. Together with a small
oak case containing 10 20th Century specimen slides. The slides with the
monogram of Sir Philip Brocklehurst who gifted them to Bob Bell, a
biologist with The British Antarctic Survey Team during the 1970s. Both
items are believed to have been on the
Nimrod
during the 1907
