1922 Tailteann Games Prospectus and programmes.

“1922 Irish Race Olympics - a Revival of the Ancients Tailteann Games”

Pp.52. Soft covers are loose & nicked. Internal staple rust. Extremely rare.

Celtic cover design by W. Victor Brown. Extremely rare. The new provisional

government set aside a budget of £10,000 for these games which were

scheduled for 1922, but were postponed due to the Civil War. They

eventually took place in 1924. Also with this lot: Aonach Tailteann 1924

Souvenir Programme. Pp.256. Illustrated. Includes double page Celtic style

illustration by Norah McGuinness & folding map; Leabhar Tailteann Aonach

1956 XVIth Olympiad, Ronnie Delaney and Eamonn Kinsella, signed

menu.

The menu of a dinner hosted by the Olympic Council of Ireland, on 29th

December, 1956 at the Dolphin Hotel Dublin “In honour of the Competitors

who represented Ireland in these Games”. Signed by Ronnie Delaney, Gold

Medallist and Eamonn Kinsella, a competitor in 110m hurdles.

Boxing. 19th Century: United States Army fight challenge proclamation

card “I will fight any of them, barring an Irishman...”

A proclamation broadside titled “A Card !” and issued by Dominick

McGlynn of Hazleton, Pennsylvania declaring that he challenges “any

member of the First Regiment P.S.N.G. (Pennsylvania State National Guard)

now stationed here to fight me a fair stand up fight in a twenty-four foot

ring, according to the rules of the London Prize Ring, for the sum of fifty

dollars or I will fight any of them barring an Irishman for one hundred

dollars...” Laid down on board marked on reverse “Reframed by William E.

Chapin Superintendent Army April 3rd 1933.” 7 x 10in. (18 x 25cm)

McNally, John: Archive of Material of Boxing Interest

Including material signed by John McNally, the Republic of Ireland’s first

winner of an Olympic boxing medal at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in

1952. Includes: Official 1952 Olympic daily boxing programme for Tuesday,

July 7, 1952 signed by Joe McNally on the cover; reproduction photograph

of McNally in his prime with his signature and inscription, his business card

and a pamphlet cover titled: Falls Road Stories Book Seventeen with a

picture on the cover of John McNally & Liam Burns with a trophy from

1952; reproduction image of the members of the Irish Olympic boxing

team in 1952 ; plaque presented to John McNally by the Irish Amateur

Boxing Association in 1988; Barry Flynn. Legends of Irish Boxing (2007),

signed and inscribed by McNally, Barry Flynn and boxer Hugh Russell;

folder of press clippings and repro photos of McNally.

Other Notes: McNally was born and raised in the Pound Loney area of west

Belfast and was the first Irish boxer to win an Olympic medal. In 1953,

John McNally won a bronze medal in the European Amateur Boxing

Championships in Warsaw, and won the Golden Gloves Championships

representing Europe against the USA in Chicago. In fact, McNally, within

the space of a year, beat three American Golden Gloves champions and

was awarded an honorary pair of Golden Gloves in recognition of this

achievement.
