Arthur Jacob medal 1860
“IN COMMEMORATION OF EMINENT SERVICES RENDERED TO SCIENCE IN
IRELAND”. Designed by Woodhouse. Copper, 65mm. Slight edge knocks,
about very fine.
Jacob, second son of John Jacob, M.D. (1754–1827), surgeon to the
Queen’s County (now Laois) infirmary, Maryborough (now Portlaoise), in
1790. He studied medicine with his father and at Steevens’s Hospital,
Dublin and graduated at the University of Edinburgh in 1814. He studied
at Paris until Napoleon’s return from Elba. He subsequently pursued his
studies in London. In 1819 he returned to Dublin, and became
demonstrator of anatomy at Trinity College. Jacob joined with Graves and
others in founding the Park Street School of Medicine. In 1826 he was
elected professor of anatomy in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland,
and held the chair until 1869. He was three times chosen president of the
college. In 1832, in conjunction with Charles Benson and others, he
established the City of Dublin Hospital. With Dr. Henry Maunsell in 1839
he started the Dublin Medical Press, a weekly journal of medical science,
and edited forty-two volumes (1839 to 1859).

obverse, and view of the hospital reverse. Also with this lot the Arthur
Jacob commemorative medal of 1860 by Woodhouse, copper, 65mm.

James William Cusack (1788-1861), B.A., M.B., M.D., F.R.C.S.I., was born in
Laraghbryan, near Maynooth, the son of Athanasius Cusack, and educated
in Trinity College, Dublin. He was awarded the degrees of bachelor of arts
1809, bachelor of medicine 1812, and doctor of medicine in 1840. On
three occasions, 1827, 1847, and 1853, he was elected president of the
Royal College of Surgeons. In 1852 he was appointed regius professor of
surgery at T.C.D.

obverse, “THE GLORIOUS MEMORY” and King William motif reverse, in
white metal and copper, 55mm; “KING AND CONSTITUTION” with coat of
arms motif obverse and “THE GLORIOUS & IMMORTAL MEMORY 1690“ and
etched date”1854” with William on horseback motif reverse, silver 35mm;

Silver medal by Mossop with George Walker bust left obverse, and siege
scene reverse, 42mm, holed at top with suspension ring, also a 50mm silver
medal with King William III bust left with diadem inner surround and

ASCENDANCY IN CHURCH AND STATE” with quote from the Duke’s speech
in the House of Lords in 1825 opposing Catholic Emancipation and “YORK
CLUB DUBLIN 1824”, another larger silver medal, 50mm, with William &
Mary busts obverse and similar quotation from York’s speech on reverse,
and a large bronze medal, 75mm, with bust of the Duke obverse, and
