Roger Casement, a letter to Herbert Ward

1913 (September) a signed four page letter from Dungavel, Lanarkshire,

“on a Scots moor in a big house”. Together with a 1983 letter from Rev.

Herbert Ward, identifying the owners of nicknames mentioned in

Casement’s letter and explaining some of the references in it. (2)

Brigade in Germany.

Includes details of the British Minister in Norway’s offer to Adler

Christinson of £5,000 for information leading to the arrest of Roger

Casement, also copy of Casement’s last letter to Keogh, and other writings,

all in Keogh’s hand, on Irish Army notepaper dated 16 February 1924 and

addressed to JH MacDonnell, London solicitor and defender of Irish

republicans. 6pp quarto.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle letters regarding his petition for clemency for

Sir Roger Casement

and a reply from Sir Ernley Blackwell, Under Secretary of State and legal

advisor to the cabinet who, in a public statement said, “I see not the

slightest objection to hanging Casement and afterwards giving as much

publicity to the contents of his diary as decency permits, so that at any

rate the public in America and elsewhere may know what sort of man they

are inclined to make a martyr of.” (3)

Karl Spindler (1887-1951) was a German Naval Officer who was involved

in the ill-fated attempt with Roger Casement to bring German arms

ashore in Ireland on behalf of Irish Volunteers as part of the Easter Rising

of 1916.

The 1916 Rising Service Medal to William Partridge

Stamped “67” and “William - Partridge”. With presentation box and

compliment slip in postage carton.

William Patrick Partridge was an active trade unionist, early Sinn Feiner

and trusted friend of James Connolly and Jim Larkin. He formed the

ITGWU and was a founder member of the Irish Labour Party. During the

Easter Rising he was a Captain in the Irish Citizen Army. He fought

alongside Countess Markievicz at the College of Surgeons.

He was captured and sentenced to 15 years but was released from prison

because of ill-health. He died of Bright’s Disease at his home in 1917,

aged 43.

William Partridge Prison Prayer Book

An Irish - English bi-lingual prayer book, given to William Partridge by Rev.

Dr. O’Loughlin, chaplain to the Irish prisoners at Portland and Lewes

Prisons, inscribed “Mr W. Partridge, Lewes 20-4-17” and with ms letter to

the flyleaf from Partridge to Mr & Mrs Lennon, Kilmainham, Dublin, signed

“William Patrick Partridge, Convict V196”; together with a letter to Mrs.

Lennon dated 21 April 1917, informing her of his release from prison and

thanking her for her assistance “in the dark hours of strive (sic.) and

stress”. (2)

1916 (3 May) letter from William Partridge imprisoned at Richmond

Barracks to James Bruton.

Address given as “c/o Officer i/c Prisoners, Block L Room 6, Richmond

Barracks, Inchicore, and addressed to Mr James Bruton of 11 South Terrace,

Inchicore. He asks Mr and Mrs Bruton to forgive him for “the

unpleasantness I unwillingly....caused in your household”. It is possible that

he lodged at the Bruton household and that the authorities raided the

house as a result. A rare early date letter from a Citizen Army captain

imprisoned at Richmond Barracks.
