glaze. In the form of a figure of Daniel O’Connell holding a bill marked
“Irish Reform Cordial”. Reverse with maker’s name “Denby Codnor Park,

Provenance:
Three framed watercolour with gouache portraits of the daughter, son-
in-law and granddaughter of ‘The Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell. Each
signed and with location lower right. 19.50 x 15.25in. (49.53 x 38.74cm)
The artist Edward Hayes was born in Tipperary in 1797 and began his
artistic career as a miniature painter in Clonmel, Waterford and Kilkenny.
A talented artist, he later moved to Dublin expanding his business to
include portraits in watercolour and pencil, such as these examples. He
was a regularly exhibited his paintings in the Royal Hibernian Academy
which included a portrait of Daniel O’Connell in 1833. He was elected a
member of the RHA in 1861. He died three years later and is buried in
Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin along with his son Michael Angelo Hayes.

Charles Bianconi (1786-1875) - a British Passport issued to the Italo-
Irish entrepreneur.
Famed for his mail coach business that improved the delivery of
passengers and post in 19th century Ireland, the passport issued by Lord
John Russell, to “Mr Charles Bianconi (A naturalised British Subject)
accompanied by his wife and child going to Belgium with two
maidservants”, dated 12 May 1860, and bearing Bianconi’s signature.
Also with this lot printed illustrated envelopes, unused (5), a certificate
of Fr. Franciscus Marinelli in Rome, etc.

1842 (6 July). “Rockite Notice” sent to Hugh Law, Mountmellick.
Poster offering “£10 REWARD” for information.
“I hereby offer a Reward of TEN POUNDS To any Person who shall, within
Six Months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to
the discovery and prosecution to conviction of the Person or Persons
etc”. The Rockites were a group of working class revolutionaries active
mainly active in the 1820s, but still around in the 1840s. The pseudonym
“Captain Rock“ was used on threatening letters sent mainly to landlords
who evicted tenants, and various officers of the State. Letterpress. 11 x

Summer Sessions during 1847. Covering both Carlow and Tullow, a total
of 154 individual named cases for a total amount of £162 and with
sentences ranging from under a month to transportation for 10 years.
An interesting document dating from the Great Famine period. 13.50 x
