1870-71: Irish Quaker Minister John Robson’s Tour of America
manuscript journal
A unique and impressive 159pp manuscript journal compiled by Irish
Quaker Minister John Robson as he toured the United States and Canada
in 1870 and 1871. Includes illustrations and additional material as
described below. Contained in a purpose made cloth clamshell case.
An informative report on the conditions of Quakers and the Quaker
religion in the United States and Canada in the early 1870s, Robson also
records his observations on life in the United States and Canada
generally; provides detailed descriptions on the status and activities of
dozens of Quaker congregations; and discusses the differences and
similarities between American, Canadian and British Quakers. He also
provides trenchant descriptions on the state of blacks and whites in the
American South during Reconstruction, as well as discussing the efforts
of American and Canadian Quakers to assist Indians. He visited many
areas including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, the province of Ontario,
Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
This allowed him to attend numerous Quaker meetings throughout those
areas and he provides a great amount of detail regarding the activities of
Quaker congregations, their acts and charitable enterprises, as well as
discussing the disagreements and schisms in the faith. Robson also makes
interesting observations on the men and women who led the Quaker
congregations he visited, providing valuable information on Quaker
leadership at the time. Also included is another manuscript journal kept
by Robson while he toured Italy in 1864. The journal includes Robson’s
observations in Milan, Turin, Genoa, and various other places as the
visited sites around Italy. For a more detailed description please visit
