1914-18 Women munitions workers on War Service, Dublin,
photograph and letters.
Photograph of a group of women with sign reading “ON WAR SERVICE”,
and letters on National Munitions (No. 10 Area), Ireland, National Shell
Factory, Parkgate Street, Dublin, certifying that Miss Mary Noonan served
from November 1916, and a letter of dismissal dated 9 December 1918,
less than a month after Armistice Day. Extremely rare record of Irish
women working on British War Service.
Provenance: Mary “May” Noonan, who is pictured in the photograph;
thence by descent, and gifted to the present owner.
National Shell Factories were established in Cork, Dublin, Galway and Waterford.
The workforce in the new shell factories was overwhelmingly female. Only five per
cent of this industrial workforce could be male under government munitions
regulations. The Shell Factories gave many young Irish women their first experience
as trade unionists, with the women represented by the NFWW, the National
Federation of Women Workers, which succeeded in bringing about improved
conditions and rates of pay, but not without struggle. In September 1918 for
example, almost 600 women were temporarily locked out of employment.

1918-19. Sir William Orpen poem “Mud” original manuscript sent to
his wife in England
Headlined “Zilebeke Church, October 1918” on a single foolscap sheet,
Orpen’s famous poem on the battlefield in World War I, in which he
served as a war artist with the rank of major, in his own hand and signed
“Billon” . In original envelope with Field Post Office and Military censor
marks, dated 19 May 1919, addressed to Lady Orpen at Chesham, and

most famous artists and arguably Britain’s greatest World War I artist,
who uniquely conveyed some of the horror of trench warfare.
