1921 (April 23), “Johnson’s Motor Car” corre-
spondence from Ford Motor Company.
A letter from the Ford Motor Company to Dr.
H.M. Johnson regarding the theft of his “Touring
Car” and providing the engine number. Together
with Dr Henry Johnson’s passport. (2)
In early 1921, a County Donegal Irish Republi-
can Army unit needed transport to a town over
fifty miles away, but had no car to carry them.
They sent a telegraph to Henry Johnston, the local
doctor, calling him to a case and then ambushed
him and his car at a railway bridge and comman-
deered the car. A ballad “Johnson’s Motor Car” was
written about the incident. The ballad was record-
ed in the 1960s by the Dubliners and The Clancy
Brothers.
