1916 (8-22 April) Two bullets from the cargo on
the Aud.
Two of different types, a 7.62mm and a 7.7 x 56R,
both covered in marine matter after a century
beneath the sea. Showing signs of depth charge
damage. Lifted from the Aud’s cargo of ammuni-
tion once destined for the Irish Volunteers in 1916
Provenance: Salved from the wreck of the Aud by
the present owner.

Karl Spindler, captain of the Aud. German med-
al for Life-saving awarded to him in 1908.
Bronze medal, 70mm, coat of arms DER SENAT
D. FREIN HANSE STAT BREMEN (Free State of
Bremen); reverse, FUER RETTUNG AUS GE-
FAHR (“For Rescue From Danger”). Awarded
to Spindler for rescuing a drowning woman in
the frozen River Weser, Bremen. Crown Princess
Cecilie Auguste Narie Herzogin of Mecklen-
burg-Schwerin presented the medal to Spindler.
Provenance: Hannelore Spindler, from whom
acquired by the present owner.

1916 (8-22 April). Picture postcard of the Aud
captain, Karl Spindler, signed by him.
Signed in ink. Mounted alongside a preserved and
restored machine gun bullet from the AUD’s cargo,
and a layout plan of the ship’s side, in a box frame
with a copper plaque stating, “AUD, SMS LIBAU,
A bullet from cargo hold No.2, Leutnant z.S.d.R.
Karl Spindler 22nd April 1916.” An attractive and
rare collectible from this important episode of
Irish history.

Medal Commemorating Captain Karl Spindler
of the blockade runner Libau (Aud) 1916, medal
designed by John T. Ryan and manufactured by
Godet, Berlin. A translation of the obverse legend
reads, ‘Captain Karl Spindler, Commander S.M.S.
Libau; Helpcruiser Libau, Blockade Breaker to
Ireland 8-22 April 1916’; reverse in Irish, ‘From
the Executive Committee for Freedom in America
1931, for his services to Ireland at Easter 1916’.
edge bearing the manufacturer’s name, ‘Gebr. Go-
det & Co, Berlin’, scarce.
