Late 19th Century Loyal Orange Order banner for Canadian lodge.

Attractive handpainted banner for L.O.L. 3228, Caribou Lodge, Vancouver, Canada, dating from early 20th

century. Obverse: King William on horseback at the Battle of The Boyne. Reverse: crowned shield showing

emblems of Canada’s provinces, surrounded by maple leaves and “CANADA OUR HOME / BRITISH LIBERTY”

inscriptions. Made by Ambrose Kent & Sons, Toronto, Ontario (active circa 1880-1900) 71 by 48 in. (180 by

122cm)

Orange Lodges were first established in Canada in 1812, and by the mid 19th century the Order had lodges

in most of the cities and provinces. The Order was active in the suppression of rebellions against the British

administration and also participated in the resistance of the Fenian raid into Canada. Over 80,000 members of

the Order in Canada volunteered for service in World War I. The Order was very influential in Canadian business

and politics and four Orangemen have been Prime Ministers of Canada - Sir John A. Macdonald, the father of

Canadian Confederation, Sir John Abbott, Sir Mackenzie Bowell (a past Grand Master), and John Diefenbaker.
