autograph letter.

A 2½-page letter, headed ‘Confidential’, regarding the

appointment of a Major General Hill. Attractively

framed with an engraving of Wellington. The letter

19th Century cast iron Coat of Arms of the Duke of Devonshire.

A very good heavy Victorian cast iron and painted Coat of Arms of the Duke of Devonshire, with the motto

‘Cavendo Tutus,’ highlighted in blue and gilt with stags and antlers, within a circular border of entwined serpents.

The Devonshire family seats are Chatsworth House, Bolton Abbey in Yorkshire, and Lismore Castle in Co

Waterford, an estate of mountain, woodland and agricultural land. The Duke is among the largest landowners in

Ireland - in the 1870s the Devonshire estates in Ireland amounted to over 60,000 acres.
