1881-1923 Political correspondence of J. J. Clancy (1847-1928)

An archive of 31 letters including, 1885 (December 27) from Charles Stewart Parnell; 1888 (Oct 19) from William

Gladstone re. evictions; 1895 (February 12) from Michael Davitt; 1916 (May 15) from H.H. Asquith on Vice

Regal Lodge notepaper, handwritten and signed; 1917 (July 5) from David Lloyd George on 10, Downing Street

notepaper, typed with autograph signature, inviting Clancy to join the Irish Convention; also a signed, hand-

written speech by John Redmond referring to the Housing of the Working Classes 1908 Act, popularly known as

the Clancy Act, a Draft Report of the Irish Convention, marked “secret and Most Confidential”, numbered ‘13’ and

bearing Clancy’’s name, with notations.

John Joseph Clancy (15 July 1847 - 25 November 1928), usually known as J. J. Clancy, was an Irish nationalist

politician and Member of Parliament for North County Dublin from 1885 to 1918. He was one of the leaders of

the Irish Home Rule movement and promoter of the Housing of the Working Classes (Ireland) Act 1908, known as

the Clancy Act. Called to the Irish Bar in 1887 he became a KC (King’s Counsel) in 1906.

1886 Charles Stewart Parnell, commemorative plate.

Of octagonal form, the ivory ground centred by a portrait of Parnell surmounted by the motto Erin - go - Bragh”

and a harp among shamrock, the portrait garlanded with wild roses. Marked with registration number 41050 for

1886.
