1921 The IRA GHQ Staff. A sketch by Leo Whelan.
An oil sketch for Whelan’s famous painting which depicted the GHQ staff
shortly after the Truce of June 1921, which he completed in 1923 and
which is now in the National Museum, Collins Barracks. This sketch
includes only 12 figures whereas the completed work features 13 -
Michael Collins (intelligence), Richard Mulcahy (chief-of-staff), Gearóid
O’Sullivan (adjutant-general), Eamon Price (organisation), Rory O’Connor
(engineering & OC Britain), Eóin O’Duffy (assistant chief-of-staff), Seán
Russell (munitions), and Seán McMahon (quartermaster-general). Standing:
J. J. O’Connell (training), Emmet Dalton (operational training), Seán
Donovan (chemicals), Liam Mellowes (purchases), and Píaras Beaslaí

1921: (February-September) IRA prisoner mail to and from Ballykinler
Camp.
A correspondence between Patrick O’Loughlin, Prisoner No. 975, Hut 38, H
Company, No. 2 Camp, Ballykinlar, Co. Down, and his parents at 39 Lower
Kevin Street. Comprises 20 letters from the prisoner, all with stamped
envelopes postmarked BALLYKINLER CAMP, and 12 letters to the prisoner,
all with stamped envelopes and camp censor manuscript markings, also
some empty envelopes and some other letters and cards. Also included is a
photocopy of O’Loughlin’s Internment Order of 29 December 1920. A rare
primary source on life in the War of Independence prisoner camps and in
Dublin city. (48)

1921: Ballykinlar Internment Camp Chess Medal
An extremely unusual and scarce white metal medal. With chess board
decoration on the obverse and engraved on the reverse in Irish ‘Chess
Competition in Ballykinlar 1921’. Also with ‘“On my keeping and in theirs :
a record of experiences on the run, in Derry Gaol, and in Ballykinlar
Internment Camp’ by Louis J. Walsh, Talbot Press, Dublin 1921. (2 items)

Mimeograph, 6pp. The first edition of Barbed Wire produced by prisoners
held in Ballykinlar camp. A scarce item consisting of six single pages with
information, advice, jokes, sports notes etc.

Breen, Dan. Manuscript Letter on Dáil Éireann Letterhead 15th, July,
1961
1961. Good A 4pp. mss. signed letter on Dáil Éireann headed notepaper
dated 15/7/61. Includes: “.Some kind friend would like to see me out of
public life or even dead and forgotten. That would suit them
best............when it would be more easy for me to stay on a hill side in
Tipp............. The other report they speak about Breen don’t live in
Tipp.....why vote for him. Well I was in Tipp whenever I was needed............”.
Daniel “Dan” Breen (1894-1969) was a leading figure in the Irish
Republican Army during the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil
War. In later years, he was a Fianna Fáil politician.

A good mixed collection of Republican ephemera including nine different
Éamon de Valera East Clare by-election handbills, ‘Bishop of Limerick and
General Maxwell’ mimeograph circular, ‘English Brutality’ pamphlet,
editions of ‘The Factionist’, ‘Commandant General Michael Carolan’s
Speech from The Dock’ and ‘England’s Gallows Tree circulars, 1798

circa 1860: British Army private purchase land pattern revolver from
the collection of Éamon De Valera
A revolver similar in style to the Beaumont Adams revolver but with front
loading lever latch, made by J Beattie 205 Regent Street, London and with
VR patent marks. Many antique and older weapons were used by Irish
Volunteers during the 1916 Rising and the War of Independence, this
example was acquired by Éamon De Valera and gifted by him to a member
of An Garda Síochána who guarded his house at Cross Avenue, Blackrock.
